Standardisation can be defined as the set of activities for coordinating criteria relating to technical specifications aimed at obtaining a document or standard of voluntary application and agreed acceptance by all interested parties. One of the fundamental conditions of the process of drawing up a standard is that it is developed within a recognised Standardisation Body.
Standardisation activity in the field of telecommunications must take account of the fact that the requirements of service providers, manufacturers and users are increasing day by day, being not only more numerous but increasingly sophisticated. In addition, it is important to highlight the rapid evolution of telecommunications, which even leaves techniques or technological developments obsolete before they reach the market. This pace in the evolution of information technologies requires structures capable of adapting to it and responding effectively to the challenges that arise.
It is therefore necessary to have standardisation bodies in the field of telecommunications at national, European and international level. The Technical Standardisation Area monitors and participates in the work carried out by the telecommunications standardisation bodies in the different fields.
