On June 11, 2026, the closing event of the first European Artificial Intelligence Sandbox was held, led by the General Directorate of Artificial Intelligence of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Ministry and, as can be seen in the agenda that appears below, brought together institutional representatives, staff of the AI Office of the European Commission, the companies participating in the Sandbox and members of the panel of experts.

The workshop highlighted the first AI regulatory testing environment developed in Europe, as well as the main learning, milestones and results obtained during the project. The next steps in the development of this type of instrument, aimed at facilitating a safe, responsible and innovative application of the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation, were also addressed.

The event, which aroused enormous interest in the AI ecosystem, with more than 200 people registered, constituted a space for exchange between administrations, companies and experts, which allowed to share experiences and reflect on the progress made in terms of regulation in order to have a reliable artificial intelligence.

The closing of the event by María Gómez Veracruz, the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, who presented the participation diplomas to the 11 systems that have been part of the sandbox, constituted the institutional brooch of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, which echoed the event in this news: Portal MTDFP | Government successfully concludes Europe’s first artificial intelligence sandbox

In addition, the event was a recognition of the panel of experts, constituted at the beginning of the sandbox by renowned AI professionals in all areas, who participated in the resolution of high-impact issues, as well as in the webinars carried out and the event of experts in October last year.

On April 22, 2026, the second webinar of the Sandbox Artificial Intelligence pilot project was held, dedicated to regulatory sandboxes within the framework of the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation. The session aimed to analyze the state of implementation of these test environments from a European perspective, as well as to learn practical experiences and regulatory approaches developed in other countries.

The webinar was attended by Aleida Alcaide, General Manager of Artificial Intelligence, who opened the institution, and by Antonino Rotolo, coordinator of the EU Regulatory Sandboxes for AI (EUSAIR) project, Sadia Berdaï, head of artificial intelligence, innovation and technology at the Luxembourg data protection authority, and Daniele Pagani, from the Luxembourg Centre for Technological Innovation. Carmen Reina and Igor García Olaizola, members of the panel of experts of the IA Sandbox, also participated.

Among the main messages of the webinar was highlighted the role of regulatory sandboxes as connecting spaces between the legal, technical, business and social spheres, favoring a shared understanding of regulatory requirements. It also stressed the importance of moving towards common methodologies at European level, which allow to speed up regulatory compliance, improve legal certainty and facilitate the commercialization of AI systems, especially those considered high-risk.

On March 18, 2026, the webinar “AI without code and high-risk systems: the challenge of agents against the AI Act” was held, focusing on the challenges posed by non-code and low-code AI tools in the context of the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation, especially when they can give rise to high-risk systems.

The session was attended by Adrián González Sánchez, María del Carmen Aguayo-Torres, Oscar Lage and Cristina Mesa, members of the panel of experts of the IA Sandbox. Each speaker addressed the issue from a complementary perspective:

• Innovation and new digital profiles
• Cases of use and technological democratization
• Cybersecurity and governance
• Legal responsibility and regulatory compliance.

The meeting showed that the real competitive advantage lies not only in deploying AI solutions quickly, but in doing so in a secure, governed manner and in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework.

On October 23, 2025, an event was held at the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, which was attended by experts, representatives of the companies participating in the sandbox and the Market Surveillance Authorities.

During the day, a structured debate was held around three topics, organized in three working groups. Each theme was led by a team composed of a moderator and a co-moderator, with the participation of between 14 and 15 agents.

All attendees had the opportunity to participate in the three thematic sessions, aimed at promoting reflection and the exchange of ideas:

• Theme 1: General purpose AI systems.
• Theme 2: Administrative simplification of the European AI Regulation.
• Theme 3: Usefulness of the sandbox guides.

During this event, some of the experts of the advisory panel collaborating with the sandbox recorded informative pills that help to better understand the regulatory challenges that Spanish companies face with the Regulation:

• Standards for Regulation, by José Antonio Jiménez, Digitization Coordinator at the Spanish Association for Standardization.
• Practical keys to compliance with the Regulations by a company, by Moisés Barrio, State Council Attorney.
• The impact of AI regulation on medical devices with AI, by Inmaculada Pérez, Head of AI regulation at BSI Group.
• Technical and compliance AI lifecycle, by Adrián González, Lead AI architect.
• Transparency in AI, by Nuria Delgado.
• Interplay of AI with data protection and privacy; obligations in the IA Regulation, by Belén Arribas, CEO BAS lawyers and President ENATIC.

Sandbox IA Infoday: More than 300 registrants attest to its relevance in the innovation sector.

• The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence highlighted the Sandbox IA project as a key initiative and commitment to responsible innovation.
• The call will remain open until January 23 and 12 high-risk AI systems will be selected.

The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, through its Office for Digital Spain 2030 and Internationalization, organized a successful Infoday to present the bases of the call for Sandbox IA aimed at high-risk systems. The event managed to bring together more than 300 participants, both face-to-face and telematically, reflecting the great interest generated by this initiative.

The Secretary of State, María González Veracruz, endorsed and recognized the project as a determined commitment of the Government to support companies, especially SMEs and Startups on their path to innovation and regulatory compliance.

During the event, a round table was held in which different aspects of the AI Regulation could be discussed, doubts could be resolved, perspectives could be exchanged and improvements could be proposed for the future of Artificial Intelligence.

Finally, the leaders of the Sandbox IA presented the bases of the call to the attendees and provided a space for exchange of ideas with them, promoting a constructive dialogue on the details of the project.
