Spain is organized by telephone in districts and provincial numbering areas. Calls within a district are considered metropolitan, while provincial calls are those that start and end in different districts of the same provincial numbering zone. For their part, interprovincial calls are those that begin and end in districts belonging to different provincial areas.
The National Telephone Numbering Plan, approved by Royal Decree 2296/2004, of 10 December, established an organization based on 50 provincial numbering areas and 508 telephone districts.
Following the adoption of the Resolution of 5 April 2013 amending the distribution of telephone districtsits boundaries and number were changed, with a single telephone district established for each of the 50 existing provincial numbering areas.
