Madrid, May 10, 2024.- The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, through the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence, has closed the process of submitting candidacies to occupy the General Directorate of the Spanish Agency for Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA).
The announcement, materialized through an expression of Interest launched on April 8th, I was looking to find the right profile to lead this pioneering institution in Europe. The requirements for the candidates included academic and technical experience in artificial intelligence, management and leadership skills, legal knowledge and ethical perspective, as well as a broad network of contacts in the business, institutional and academic fields.
The vacancy has been very well received, since in the month in which the process has been open a total of 106 candidacies with varied profiles ranging from the business world to the academic world have been presented. In addition, the experience accredited by the candidates, as well as the work of reflection to express their vision of the AESIA -as required by the expression of interest-demonstrate an impeccable quality of the Spanish talent in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
To continue with the process, the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence and president of the AESIA, has appointed a group of experts to advise on the evaluation of the candidates based on their experience and knowledge of the Spanish and global technological ecosystem.
The group of experts is composed of:
- Jordi Torres, expert in high-performance computing architectures
- Claudio Feijóo, specialized in the digital economy and technological transformation
- Nuria Oliver, known for her research on computational models of human behavior and intelligent systems
- Daniel Innerarity, political philosopher with a focus on technology governance
With the creation of this group of experts to advise on the evaluation of candidacies, AESIA reaffirms its commitment to an ethical, responsible supervision of artificial intelligence that is in line with the needs of Spanish society, as well as a transparent and objective selection process. The interdisciplinarity of the group’s profiles, as well as its experience in the sector, will be fundamental to complete an objective and detailed evaluation of the candidates, taking into account the high requirement that the General Directorate of AESIA will entail.
It is expected that in a few days the group of experts will present an evaluation accompanied by proposals for the appointment of the Secretary of State to select the candidate or candidate during the month of May so that it will be subsequently appointed or appointed by the Governing Council of the Agency. Once the person who will lead the AESIA has been designated, the work of selecting the rest of the staff will begin.
