  • Óscar López announces an investment of 9 million euros in Sensia, a Madrid company of infrared radiation sensors with applications in environment, sustainability and prevention and detection of natural disasters.
  • Sensia will accelerate the development of disruptive infrared sensors based on nanotechnology, reducing dependence on external suppliers and positioning Spain as a reference in this technology.
  • Founded in 2008 and born as a spin-off of the Carlos III University of Madrid, Sensia is located in the Leganés Technological Park (Madrid) and has more than 100 employees.

Madrid, February 13, 2025.- The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service, Óscar López, announced today the entry of SETT (Spanish Society for Technological Transformation) into the Madrid company Sensia, with a public co-investment of 9 million euros. This Spanish company leads the world in innovation in solutions based on infrared technology, key to the strategic sovereignty of Spain.

Founded in 2008 and born as a spin-off of the Carlos III University of Madrid, Sensia is located in the Leganés Technological Park (Madrid) and has more than 100 employees. It is one of the most cutting-edge Spanish companies in the production of infrared image photodetectors, with numerous applications in fields such as the environment, the sustainability of industrial activity or the safety and detection of natural disasters.

The project, which will receive a total injection of 19 million euros, in a co-investment of SETT with the fund manager of the financial group A&G, plans to develop a new generation of sensors that significantly improves the performance of the current ones, which would give Spain and Europe a fundamental competitive advantage against other actors such as Israel, the United States or China.

“Sensia has its origins in a public university in Madrid. It is an example of the return to society of public investment in talent, that the real seed capital of transformative projects sinks its roots in the university and grows with public-private partnerships such as this that the Government is determined to continue promoting,” said Minister Óscar López during a visit to the company’s facilities. The minister also highlighted the strategic priority that for Spain represents the prevention and detection of natural disasters such as forest fires, responsible for razing 47,711 hectares in 2024.

Pioneer in Artificial Intelligence in Infrared Image for automatic detection and unattended operation.

SENSIA is the most advanced AI-based Intelligent Infrared Imaging company for detection automation. Its technology does not require a human observer to perform the detection and allows, for example, the early and automatic detection of forest fires or the detection of leaks of toxic and polluting gases. For example, its cameras are used in the energy sector for the decarbonization of fossil fuel industries or the monitoring of ship emissions during port operations.

The company has the highest degree of technological autonomy known in this sector and develops and produces all the technology it offers, both hardware and software, as well as AI algorithms and their training, thus having total control over the quality and performance of its products, which positions the entity in a preeminent place within the sector of infrared cameras.

Its sensors do not require lighting or external radiation emissions, but they detect heat, therefore, they are undetectable unlike other systems such as radar, laser, GPS or radio frequency. Infrared radiation thus offers a unique tactical advantage in, for example, satellite observation missions or national security.

The Government’s investment in the company’s shares is within the framework of the PERTE Chip, with the aim of consolidating organic growth in the industrial and technological sector, as well as enhancing the development of its own infrared sensors.

Together with SETT, a Public Business Entity attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, A&G Energy Transition Tech Fund (A&G ETTF), an investment group in hardware and software companies focused on accelerating the energy transition and the decarbonization of key sectors of the economy, providing growth capital to European companies with cutting-edge technologies, is also participating.
