  • They will standardize the characteristics of network routing systems for new developments and criteria for the wireless technological deployment of 5G urban applications.
  • These standards have been promoted by the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures in the UNE Subcommittee on Infrastructures, whose secretariat is carried out by COIT.
  • With these improvements, the urban impact of the new technological elements necessary to have greater connectivity capabilities is optimized and harmonized.

The Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, through the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, has promoted two new UNE Standards to standardize the urban deployment of telecommunication networks. They have been agreed by the sector and named as the UNE 133100-6 and the UNE 133100-7, forming part of the UNE 133100 Series ‘Infrastructures for telecommunications networks’.

These standards homogenize the characteristics of the systems of construction and channeling of networks in the new urbanizations, which will have repercussions in greater optimization for operators and a more orderly urbanism. They also establish criteria in the wireless technological deployment of 5G technology with which the urban furniture of smart cities will be provided with a signal.

The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, María González Veracruz, said that “it is good news because we unify technical criteria and optimize in a homogeneous way the deployment of new technological elements of connectivity. This translates into better and more orderly urbanism, more accurate and efficient work for operators, and better services and capabilities for citizens through smart cities.”

For his part, for Alfredo Berges, president of the Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, “the UNE standards provide an effective response to the great challenges of Spanish society and economic sectors, such as digitalization. In addition, they are a solid support of the Administrations for the implementation of public policies.”

    Technical criteria adopted

These new standards have been agreed within the UNE Subcommittee on Infrastructures (CTN-UNE 133/SC 1), chaired by the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures and coordinated by the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers (COIT), with the participation of 42 other entities from the entire ecosystem of the telecommunications sector.

Both standards were published on January 17 and are part of the UNE 133100 Series ‘Infrastructures for telecommunications networks’. The UNE 133100-6 standard1 lays down the criteria for the design of multi-operator infrastructures for new developments and redevelopments, including the determination of appropriate topologies and the dimensioning of infrastructures and associated resources for hosting very high-capacity electronic communications networks (VHCN).

For its part, the UNE 133100-7 standard2 Defines the general conditions for the installation of wireless access points for small areas (SAWAP, Small Area Wireless Access Point) in existing urban and outdoor public furniture, such as outdoor lighting or signage scales and columns, bus canopies, traffic lights, signage and any other element of public furniture capable of housing this type of equipment.
