AI Open Source Community

The initiative aims to act as a meeting point for the open source ecosystem of AI in Spain, articulated in a platform where developers, researchers, companies and Administration come together.

· The objectives are to promote practical AI solutions; to channel the Spanish leadership in the adaptation and integration of AI solutions; and to create a talent group in AI, taking as a starting point

· It will take as its starting point the scientific, technological and talent capacity that Spain has already built around ALIA, connecting, coordinating and amplifying that knowledge so that it benefits more people and companies.

· According to the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, “this community aspires to democratize access and promote collective innovation to make AI for all: more accessible, more open and at the service of the public interest”

· The first activity will be the A-Thon ‘ALIA Challenge: Creating an AI community in Spain’, which will take place on December 17 in Madrid. Open registration here

The Government of Spain takes a new step in the democratization of access to Artificial Intelligence and in the promotion of the technological sovereignty of the country with the implementation of the Open Source AI Community. The creation of this community together with the Spanish AI ecosystem has been announced today by the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, within the framework of the presentation day in Madrid of the second edition of Talent Arena, an event promoted by the Mobile World Capital Foundation with the support of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function.

According to González Veracruz, this community “aspires to democratize access to AI, foster collective innovation and prevent the digital future from being in the hands of the few. We make AI more accessible, for everyone and in the service of the public interest.”

The purpose of the Open Source AI Community is to act as a meeting point for the AI ecosystem in Spain, where developers, researchers, companies and Public Administration come together. Three are the objectives of the initiative: to promote practical AI solutions for economic and social challenges; to channel Spanish leadership in the adaptation and integration of AI solutions; and to create a talent pool in AI.

It will take as its starting point the scientific, technological and talent capacity that Spain has already built around ALIA, connecting, coordinating and amplifying that knowledge so that it benefits more people and companies. The entry point will be the website of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, although it will be supported by the existing open source communities:

Participatory consultations

To promote the participatory nature of the initiative, three consultation processes have been opened. El first process It will consist of understanding the economic and social challenges that could be solved with AI and also to know the technological tools that could be useful for this community. El second It is proposed to create a network of Open Source AI Community ambassadors to help organize encounters and challenges and advance community goals. And the third It will focus on the commitments that entities, both public and private, are willing to make to support the effective deployment of this community.

From this space, the community will offer open access to open source AI models, such as ALIA; machine translation and multilingual models; datasets, offering text, voice and machine translation corpus; or integration tools for text, voice and translation models, with annotated data and resources for assessment and training.

It will also explore making available public computing capabilities, based on already existing open source networks (the BSC, the EDIH Network (European Digital Innovation Hubs) in Spain or TEF); it will have a live repository of technical documentation, use cases and practical guides, including checklist for SMEs based on the AI Regulation; and it will deploy a network of ambassadors and local nodes integrating universities, innovation hubs and business associations.

Likewise, there will be hackathons, applied training programs and university roadshows; and networking sessions will be promoted to connect talent with companies looking for advanced digital profiles.

Participatory activities

The first activity of the Community will be the ‘ALIA Challenge: Creating an AI community in Spain’, within the framework of the National Program of Green Algorithms. The challenge, which will take place in Madrid on December 17, will focus on innovation and sustainability in AI. The challenge proposes participants to experiment, learn and contribute to the development of ‘prompts’ for more efficient AI thanks to the ALIA-40B model; and solve real sustainability and efficiency challenges and create a more conscious AI with the planet. The term of registration It is open until November 30.

Synergies with Talent Arena 2026

The presentation of the AI Open Source Community took place as part of the presentation in Madrid of the second edition of Talent Arena, a forum with which the community will establish synergies. The event brought together leading companies in the technology sector, developers and training centers this morning at the Madrid Sales Space, with the participation, together with the Secretary of State, of the CEO of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Francesc Fajula; the CEO and director of GSMA Ltd., John Hoffman; and the CEO of Red.es, Jesús Herrero. Thus, the day has called on the technological community of the country to participate in this important event of developers of Europe, which is positioned as a space of connection between companies and talent in Spain. Talent Arena will be held in Barcelona between 2 and 4 March 2026.
