Spain joins the initiative of the European Commission to promote gender equality in the digital field

    On the occasion of the “Digital Day” the Member States have ratified their commitment to implement policies and work together with institutions, companies and civil society to promote the presence of women in the digital, science and technology fields.

    15% ICT jobs held by women

    Currently, only 15% of jobs related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are occupied by women, a gap that affects all levels of the digital economy. The reasons are diverse, with gender prejudices and the roles traditionally assigned to both genders being among the main ones.

    To advance and achieve greater participation of women in these areas of activity, the Member States are committed to enacting a national intersectoral strategy aimed at increasing gender equality in the digital world, with special emphasis on education and qualification, ensuring a favorable work environment and equal opportunities.

    Likewise, will work in collaboration with the media to convey a positive image of women in the digital environment, in order to combat stereotypes. It will establish “Girls’ and Women’s ICT Day” across Europe, with the aim of increasing the visibility and knowledge of professions related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and boosting their study among girls and women.

    Among the commitments signed are also the promotion and promotion of a non-discriminatory work culture, the advancement in the balanced composition of men and women in national and European organizations, boards and committees dealing with digital issues whenever possible and the continuous monitoring of the evolution of the real participation of women in the digital economy.

    In line with this action, the Ministry of Economy and Enterprise recently published the White Paper of Women in the Technological Field, aimed at giving visibility and analyzing the gap that exists between men and women in this sector to serve as a guide to the public authorities when proposing effective measures to address inequalities.
