eDNI Use Awareness Campaign
The Government, together with the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and for the Information Society, has announced the implementation of an action plan to promote the use of electronic ID among citizens and business groups. With the electronic DNI, citizens can carry out multiple actions through the Internet with Public Administrations and companies in a safe, convenient and agile way. The vast majority of Public Administrations (General Administration of the State, CCAA and Local Entities) and companies already have telematic services that allow the use of electronic ID.

The main novelty of the document with respect to the traditional national identification documents is that it incorporates a small integrated circuit (chip), which contains the same data that appear printed on the card (personal data, photograph, digitized signature, digitized fingerprint) along with the certificates of Authentication and Electronic Signature.
One of the great novelties of the electronic ID is the possibility to carry out procedures with the Public Administrations and companies electronically, avoiding travel, waiting times, etc. Currently, the vast majority of Public Administrations (General Administration of the State, Autonomous Communities and Local Entities) and companies already have services that allow the use of electronic ID through the Internet. Among the most used are: applying for work history, making the income statement, applying for unemployment benefits, checking personal data in public records, applying for and sending forms, paying fees, access to online banking, etc.
Nearly 12.5 million Spaniards already have an electronic ID card, and it is estimated that by the end of 2009 the number will rise to 14 million.
