Óscar López bets on cooperation with the private sector to consolidate Spain’s leadership in cybersecurity

The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, held today a meeting with the main Spanish companies linked to cybersecurity in order to promote cooperation with the sector in this matter. “Our objective is clear, not only to protect our digital territory, but to consolidate ourselves as a strategic actor at the forefront of European and global cybersecurity. To do this, public-private collaboration will be essential.”

This meeting, which follows the one held by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with the sector on March 31, comes after the recent approval of the Industrial and Technological Plan for Security and Defense. It should be remembered that this strategy has an investment of almost 10.5 billion euros, of which 31% are intended for the manufacture and acquisition of new telecommunications and cybersecurity capabilities.

Within the framework of this initiative, Óscar López recalled the new package of cybersecurity measures approved this Tuesday by the Executive and which updates the Government of Spain’s Cybersecurity Plan of 2022. “This investment of over EUR 1.1 billion will expand core capabilities, accelerate strategic projects and strengthen cooperation with the private sector,” he added.

In addition, the minister highlighted the good position of Spain in this matter, above the average of the European Union and second country in the world with more specialized centers, and stressed the need to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the current scenario. “The objective is twofold, to strengthen our security and defence capabilities and, at the same time, to promote the national industry, the generation of talent and the development of dual-use technologies, applicable both to the civilian and military spheres.”

Likewise, Óscar López has recognized the strength of the Spanish sector and has confirmed that most of the investment aimed at cybersecurity will be directed to companies in the country, “we need an innovative and committed national industry, working closely with the institutions to make Spain a safer and more resilient country,” he concluded.

During the meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry, the holder was accompanied by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Antonio Hermando. Representatives of the companies CounterCraft, Evolutio, Indra, Innovasur, Nunsys, S2Grupo, SIRT, Telefónica, TRC and Sofistic attended the meeting.
