Brussels, 6 December 2024.- The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service, Óscar López, participated today in Brussels in the meeting of EU Telecommunications Ministers, where he defended that Europe should equip itself with its own digital model, "a third way that combines technological humanism with the strategic autonomy indicated by the Draghi report".
In this Telecommunications Council, ministers discussed the appropriateness of adapting the goals and objectives of the Digital Decade to recent technological changes. Minister López explained that Spain is in favour of the European Union being “flexible to adjust its objectives to technological evolution without compromising the final goal”. “Es crucial establecer indicadores específicos para tecnologías emergentes como 6G, Quantum, Cloud e Inteligencia Artificial. And we must set realistic intermediate milestones. The 5G experience demonstrates the importance of considering the necessary investment and market demands.”
European ministers have also addressed the protection of minors in the digital environment, an issue that concerns citizens throughout Europe and that constitutes “an absolute priority for the Government of Spain,” in the words of López.
The minister has informed his European colleagues that Spain is preparing a specific law to protect minors in the digital sphere and has developed a technological tool that would allow adult content platforms to verify the age of majority of their users. Óscar López has made the Spanish experience in this regard available to the Commission and the Member States.
