  • The Foundation was established last March by the Belgian entity IMEC International in order to develop pioneering research in nanotechnology and digital technology
  • This support is another step in the project of the future Development and Innovation Center in Microelectronics that will be built in the Technology Park of Andalusia, in Malaga
  • The ultimate goal is to strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem in Spain, boost research and development capacity, and thus contribute to the positioning of Spain as a key player in the European and global environment in the microelectronics and semiconductor sector.

The Council of Ministers has today authorized a direct aid of eight million euros to the IMEC Spain Foundation for the development of the UNICO I+D-IMEC Spain Program. The Foundation, formed last March by the consortium IMEC International, manages R&D activities in order to develop pioneering research in nanotechnology and digital technology.

This support is another step in the project of the future Development and Innovation Center in Microelectronics that will be built in the Technology Park of Andalusia, in Malaga. It is a project for which the Spanish Executive has committed a total of 500 million euros and which it finances together with Imec, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía, within the framework of the Microelectronics and Semiconductors Strategic Project (PERTE Chip).

The programme that will receive this new aid of eight million euros has as its objective the technological advance through two lines of action. The first line focuses on research in broadband flat optics technologies, aimed at optimizing the optical efficiency, integration and miniaturisation of conventional lenses and which has many applications from mobile phone cameras to virtual reality, among many others.

The second line of action is aimed at increasing the scalability, energy efficiency, functional heterogeneity and advanced manufacturing capacity of next generation microelectronic systems.

The objective is to promote in Spain a dynamic R+D+I ecosystem in semiconductors, in which universities, research centers, start-ups and industries can make use of the results of the research, adapting them to their needs and particularities. Universities and research centers focus on the development of talent and joint projects, while the industry has access to specific solutions adapted to their profile.

In this way, it contributes to the positioning of Spain as a key player in the European and global environment in the sector of microelectronics and semiconductors.

IMEC Spain Foundation

The IMEC Spain Foundation was established in 2026 by the Belgian entity IMEC International. It aims to carry out pioneering strategic research in nanotechnology and digital technology, as well as introduce new advances in the market through partnerships or start-ups and help companies and universities to access these new technologies. Its work, therefore, connects science with the market, facilitating the creation of companies, the promotion of patents and the access of universities and the Spanish industrial fabric to cutting-edge technologies.
