Madrid, June 14, 2024.- The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, has made a balance of the main data reflected in its Audiovisual Sector Report 2023. According to this study, audiovisual production is being consolidated in Spain as an industrial sector through a significant growth in both employment and the level of income for Social Security derived from international filming carried out in our territory.

Among the most outstanding data is the generation of employment in audiovisual activities, which has increased more than 93% in three years. Specifically, in film, video and television programming tasks in Spain, it has gone from having 32,000 people working in 2020 to exceeding 62,000 professionals in the fourth quarter of 2023. These are figures to which both the increase in national production and, also, the notable increase in the attraction of international filming in our country contribute.

This attraction of filming, under a transversal strategy in which initiatives have been coordinated with measures from up to thirteen ministries, is making Spain one of the main recipients of investment in original content production in Europe, already approaching the countries that traditionally led this investment such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Only in film productions, the report points out that Spain has seen a growth of 37% in the last year, going from 273 productions in 2022 to over 375 in 2023. In the case of foreign productions made in Spain, this investment has resulted in 10,000 work contracts worth 55.5 million euros, of which 12 correspond to the Personal Income Tax and has meant an income of almost 22 million for the Social Security. The videogames sector is another of those that lead a continuous growth, with an increase in turnover of 16.3% in 2023, which raises the total figure to 2,339 million euros, and an increase in development studies, from 432 to 524, according to data from the Spanish Videogames Association (AEVI) collected in the Audiovisual Sector Report 2023.

On this report, the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, María González Veracruz, said that “it is unquestionably a particularly good time for the audiovisual industry in our country, in all its diversity and wealth. A moment that has a lot to do with the talent, the work and the professionalism of the industry, but also with the support of this government. We are investing and developing measures since 2021 through the Plan ‘Spain Audiovisual Hub of Europe’, directing the industry and audiovisual culture a State policy to turn them into economic engines and attract investment to our country”

In this regard, the Secretary of State said that “this is only the beginning. The Audiovisual Hub is very much alive, since the addendum to the Recovery Plan gives it 1,712 million more in different financial instruments. The objective is to give greater impact especially to the local industry, and we will do so after verifying satisfactorily how the Spanish audiovisual sector multiplies results with the public aid made available to it”
