● Prototyping programmes will mobilize public-private investment of more than 14 million euros in key sectors such as agro-food, industrial or waste management. ● The programme is funded by European Next Generation EU funds under the Recovery Plan. ● The grants are directed to companies, research agencies and knowledge dissemination with initiatives aimed at digitally transforming the economic tractor sectors.

Madrid, April 24, 2024.- The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, has published the final resolution proposal of the UNICO 5G Sectorial 2023 Phase II grants for the realization of projects of experimental development of 5G applications and services that affect the digital transformation of key economic sectors.

The UNICO 5G Sectorial Phase 2 Evaluation Committee, with representatives of the Secretary of State, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) has estimated nine of the eleven projects presented in this call that promote the development of an ecosystem between companies and operators that favors the application of 5G technology in an agile way.

EUR 6.1 million has been granted to projects led by eight companies, which will directly benefit other companies and SMEs in the country and mobilise public-private investment of more than EUR 14 million.

The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, María González Veracruz, stressed that “the promotion of demand for 5G services and applications is key to continue promoting the use of this technology and the transformation of the most traditional industrial sectors. The government is investing more than 110 million euros in programs for public and private entities.” He pointed out that the objective is for this technology “whose performance represents a revolution, to transform our industry, generating productivity gains and sustainability improvements, promoting a more digital, green and sustainable Spain”.

This resolution of the UNICO 5G Sectorial program is in addition to the two previously published, mobilizing together more than 35 million public resources for private initiatives in key sectors, such as the automotive sector, through projects to develop connected buses that favor sustainable mobility, the construction industry or fire prevention.

5G technology boost strategy

The Government’s 5G strategy aims to lead the deployment of these technologies in Europe as a priority axis of the Digital Spain Agenda. The objective is for the country to have this disruptive technology to develop the capacities of 5G as an economic and social transforming element.

With this objective, programs covering all phases of development of these new mobile communication technologies have been launched in Spain and more than 1,440 million euros have been invested, financed with the European funds Next Generation EU.
Spain has been one of the first countries in the European Union to have completed the allocation of the entire 5G spectrum, in addition to having dedicated 450 Mhz for self-provision and industrial use.
