The Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure, has launched a public consultation with which it is going to gather possible regulatory initiatives and technical and operational mechanisms that help put a stop to telephone identity theft scams.

This is one of the first agreements adopted in the face of the increase in these frauds after the meetings that the Ministry has had with the different agents involved. These scams use alarming phone calls and text messages in which criminals pretend to be agents of a service company or a public body by misleading the consumer into providing confidential personal and financial information, providing their personal keys or taking any action.

The consultation aims to accelerate the consensus of actions against these scams that are causing significant financial and economic damage to consumers, companies, banks and public bodies. It is open to all interested agents such as operators, financial entities, insurers, State security bodies and forces, consumer associations, Public Administrations and other economic agents.

With the contributions received, the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures will propose the adoption of measures of a normative nature that, within its competences, may be more appropriate and efficient to prevent and combat these scams and fraudulent practices, as well as support others that companies, operators and other bodies can implement.

The consultation will remain open until March 8 and can be consulted in this link.
