The Government will bring access to ultra-fast broadband networks to more than 728,500 households and companies in the country

    The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through the Secretary of State for Digital Infrastructure Telecommunications, has published the final resolution of the second call for the Program UNIQUE-Broadband, which will allow to extend the connection of very high capacity networks (at least 100 Mbps), to more than 728,500 households and companies in the country.

    The final resolution allocates 244.6 million euros to 50 projects out of 159 presented by different operators with the aim of bringing access to ultra-fast broadband connection to 728,500 households and companies. These are scattered throughout the territory and about half are concentrated in Galicia, Castilla y León and Andalusia.

    The extension of high-speed electronic communications networks is part of the investments planned by the Government within the framework of the Recovery Plan and the Spain Digital 2026 agenda, and is financed with funds Next Generation EU. This is one of the priorities of the Executive to close the connectivity gap and promote the social and territorial cohesion of the country.

    The Program’s Help Line UNIQUE Broadband 2022 will mobilise a public-private investment of 388.2 million euros.

    The approved projects and the municipalities where they will be developed with this call can be consulted in the web from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. Most are located in white areas, with no network coverage of at least 30 Mbpsand no plans for their funding over the next three years. The rest of the approved projects will be developed in grey areas, with no ultra-fast broadband coverage or forecasts for provision in the next 3 years by a single operator.

    About UNIQUE Broadband

    Under the umbrella of the Universalization of Digital Infrastructures for Cohesion (UNICO) program, the main investments of the Recovery Plan for the digital transformation of the country in the field of digital connectivity are being channeled. UNIQUE-Broadband aims to achieve a coverage rate of very high capacities for 100% of the population by 2025.

    Currently, Spain is a leader in connectivity in Europe, occupying the third position, according to the latest Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), prepared by the European Commission. The latest coverage report from the Secretary of State for Telecommunications indicated that 96% of the Spanish population had broadband coverage at 30 Mbps In June 2021 - 91% in rural areas - and 88.3% had coverage of at least 100 Mbps.

    Since 2018, more than 1.5 billion euros have been invested through the programs to bring the network that connects us to the whole of Spain.
