The Government presents in public hearing the regulatory modification that allows the broadcasts of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) in standard definition to be extended until 2024
The Ministry of Economic Affairs, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure, has presented at a public hearing a project of Royal Decree with two regulatory modifications; one of them, related to the extension of the term of emissions of DTT in standard format and the other, with the regulation on the use of the public radio domain for the use of the band of 26 GHz for the deployment of 5G networks.
The new Royal Decree extends the deadline until February 14, 2024 for all television channels to evolve their broadcasts to high definition (HD) and stop broadcasting in standard format (SD).
This extension is due to an exceptional situation resulting from the pandemic, which has slowed down the renewal of the fleet of television sets adapted for broadcasting. DTT Of high definition.
The National Technical Plan DTT, which boosts technological innovation in television services with the implementation of television HD and the introduction of ultra-high definition (UHD), had set a date for the cessation of emissions from the DTT in standard format on 1 January 2023.
Reorganization of the band of 26 GHz
The public hearing also includes the amendment of the regulation on the use of the radio public domain to carry out a reorganization of the band of 26 GHz, priority for the deployment of 5G technology.
In the proposed regulation, it is established that a part of the frequencies of the band of 26 GHz It will have limitations on the number of concessions to be granted and its award will be made by tender procedure. In addition, it may be used for industrial purposes in certain small-scale locations on a self-service basis. This last part of the frequencies will allow to create private 5G networks for the automation of factories and production centers.
This modification is aligned with the objectives established in the Recovery Plan and the Agenda España Digital 2026, which provides for the tender of the frequencies of the band of 26 GHz in the second half of 2022.
