The Official State Gazette has published the bases that regulate the granting and first call for grants for projects related to emerging technologies, associated to Web 3 and Metaverse, that are used for the production of audiovisual content, video games and animation and immersive products through virtual, augmented and mixed reality.

Along with the order of bases that regulates this aid, within the framework of the development of the Plan to Boost the Audiovisual Sector (Spain Audiovisual Hub), the first call has also been published for projects of experimental development and innovation of processes through technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and extended reality (XR) in the field of audiovisual production and the video game sector.

These maturing technologies, which are unfolding their potential in environments such as remote work, education and scientific research, constitute tools for the production of audiovisual content in immersive environments by allowing creators to develop virtual environments, animation and video games through new procedures.

The call for grants is endowed with 3.8 million euros and is aimed at SMEs and self-employed people based in Spain or in the EU who work on projects of experimental development and process innovation in the field of technologies associated to Web 3 and Metaverse.

This aid for the production of immersive content in the audiovisual industry and the video game sector is part of the Government’s plan to develop Spain as an Audiovisual Hub within the Spain Digital 2026 strategy.

In economic terms, the business linked to the Metaverse as a whole by 2026 is estimated to exceed $1 trillion worldwide in terms of VR/AR.

The objective of this call for grants, under competitive competition, is to support SMEs in the digitalization of the audiovisual sector and contribute to configure a scenario of May competitiveness and training to take advantage of new business opportunities. It also encourages the active participation of women in the teams, establishing as a requirement that their presence is greater than 25% during the execution period.
