  • The UNICO 5G Networks - Passive programme, included in the Recovery Plan, has a budget of 150 million euros, financed by the Next Generation EU funds.

The Official State Gazette has published the bases that regulate the granting of aid from the Program UNIQUE 5G Networks - Passive to drive and accelerate the deployment of 5G technology on roads and railways (national and cross-border) and in certain rural areas that meet certain requirements. This order of bases establishes the framework for the launch of the calls for proposals.

These passive infrastructures (towers, masts, backhaul infrastructure…) are necessary for the provision of mobile communication services in areas where there is no coverage and it is not expected to be provided in the coming years. It is the first step to extend it to all territorial areas, with special attention to rural areas.’

The programme has a budget of 150 million euros to boost deployment on national and cross-border roads and railways and rural areas and will allow the updating of existing sites and the development of new 5G sites throughout the national territory with inadequate coverage.

The aid will be granted on a competitive basis, with a maximum intensity of 95%, covering four geographical areas:

Zone 1: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, and Castilla y León. (52.9 M€)

Zone 2: Aragon, Catalonia, Autonomous Community of Navarre and La Rioja. (33,0) M€)

Zone 3: Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Canary Islands. (30.0) M€).

Zone 4: Andalusia, Valencia, Region of Murcia, Balearic Islands, Autonomous City of Ceuta and Autonomous City of Melilla (34.5 M€)

The programme UNIQUE 5G Networks - Passive is intended for suitably qualified telecommunications operators. The bases state that the beneficiaries will have the obligation to allow access to the subsidised passive infrastructures to at least four operators of electronic communications services.
