The Government promotes the ‘Spanish Screenings XXL’, an international market for Spanish audiovisual production
The Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through ICEX, together with the Malaga Film Festival and the San Sebastian Film Festival and their respective municipalities, have presented today ‘Spanish Screenings XXL. An international market for Spanish audiovisual production’.
The project is part of the Plan ‘Spain, Audiovisual Hub of Europe’, presented in March 2021 as one of the axes of the Spain Digital 2025 agenda and whose objective is to promote audiovisual production, the attraction of investment and economic activity, as well as the reinforcement of companies and professionals of the audiovisual industry improving their competitiveness. It is also included in Component 25, ‘Spain Audiovisual Hub’, integrated in the policy lever IX of Impulse of the culture and sports industry of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, specifically in the internationalization program of the Spanish audiovisual sector.
The event, which took place at Cine Doré, home of screenings of Filmoteca Española, was attended by the First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño; and the Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta.
It has also had a round table, led by the director general of the ICAA, Beatriz Navas, and in which the mayors of Malaga and San Sebastián, Francisco de la Torre and Eneko Goia, as well as the delegate councilor of the ICEX (agency attached to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism), María Peña, the director of the Malaga Festival, Juan Antonio Vigar and the director of the San Sebastian Festival, José Luis Rebordinos.

‘Spanish Screenings’ Content
From 21 to 24 March, the market will be held Spanish Screenings Content within the Malaga Festival, as it is known today. It will extend its reach to subsections such as Talent, Adaptations, Remakes, Co-production Forum and a Hub of new audiovisual content for emerging platforms (from podcast, to Twich, TikTok and alternative and disruptive formats).
‘Spanish Screenings’ Financing & Tech
The San Sebastian Festival will include, from 17 to 25 September, days of attraction for powerful international investors and representatives of talent. It will also promote and put into value the new technologies applied to the audiovisual and the R&D&I.
This is an expanded continuation of the Zinemaldia & Innovation Initiative. Technology, which started in 2018 as a bet of the festival to position itself as a reference to strengthen ties between technology and audiovisual, as well as to publicize the new technological advances and the opportunities they generate for creation and business.
‘Spanish Screenings’ On Tour
With the aim of strengthening the brand Spanish Screenings Internationally, itinerant actions will be carried out aimed at the sale and promotion of the Spanish audiovisual in strategic territories, such as Eastern Europe and Asia. In addition, it will promote the respective festivals, the cities where they are held and our cultural industry in general.

In addition, it will promote the establishment of an active market throughout the year through a virtual platform of promotion and business.
Through the Spanish Screenings Content The Malaga Festival aims to achieve its objectives through various lines of work, such as achieving greater diversity in content (cinema, series, new formats on-line and off-line), as well as with new sections (remakes, literary adaptations, meeting between talents and management agencies).
It also seeks to increase the number of guests in a wider range of professional profiles: international sales agents, regional funds, Film offices/commissions, producers, international distributors, talent, press.
Another line of work is the creation of a Co-Production forum, a launch pad for new projects.
In addition, it is included Spain Colorful Diversity, an initiative for the autonomous communities, through their film offices and film commissions, present their locations and support plans for filming.
We also want to promote the meeting of VoD platforms from Europe, Asia, North America and South America.
For its part, through the Spanish Screenings Technology, the San Sebastian Festival seeks to make visible the work of Spanish companies that develop new technologies associated with the audiovisual and will have a forum and an exhibition space in its September edition.
New investments
In order to access new funds and investment agencies, the San Sebastian Festival will also develop the Spanish Screenings Financing.
The project Spanish Screenings It will have 4.2 million destined for events in 2022 and 2023, which will be articulated through nominative grants to the Malaga Festival and the San Sebastian Festival.
In addition, more than 3 million euros will be allocated to the development of the platform SpanishScreenings 360.
In parallel, the Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the ICAA, will develop new lines of support to the sector aimed at encouraging the international purchase and distribution of Spanish productions. A specific allocation of six million euros is available for this purpose.
This budget comes from the allocation of 200 million euros that component 25 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan to reinforce the role of Spain as an audiovisual hub of Europe. Of these, 20 million come from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the ICAAand 25 million from the budget of the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation.
