The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, launches a demonstration of interest to promote the National Program of Green Algorithms.
The objective of the consultation is to define the areas of knowledge and the most relevant challenges necessary to promote the development of a green artificial intelligence (AI) by design (Green by design) and environmentally sustainable, as well as to gather the needs of the Spanish business and productive fabric to carry out this transformation.
Specifically, the expression of interest seeks to provide transparency to the process of public-private collaboration, identify proposals to enrich the National Program of Green Algorithms, or evaluate the impact of each of the proposals, from a technical and economic perspective as well as environmental and social.
It will also try to infer the potential contribution of the measures to the ecological transition, understand the problems associated with measuring the environmental impact of the use of AI or analyze the degree of use of different AI technologies for the resolution of environmental challenges. In short, to promote a green artificial intelligence by design, which implies that environmental sustainability variables are incorporated from the very conception and initial development of the algorithm.
The results of the manifestation of interest will allow to promote the National Program of Green Algorithms, through two main lines of work. On the one hand, the identification and subsequent development of solutions to mitigate the environmental impact resulting from the use of AI solutions, such as the development of good practice procedures, tools and knowledge base necessary to face this challenge. And, on the other hand, the identification and subsequent development of solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges in Spain, contributing to the ecological transition of our economic and social model.
Expressions of interest can be sent until November 15 at 23:59 and be sent using the form published in the following link: https://forma.administracionelectronica.gob.es/form/open/corp/7185/RMdi
Artificial intelligence, key element of the digitalization of Spain
This expression of interest will allow us to continue advancing in the investments of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Planas well as in the agenda projects Spain Digital 2025 and of National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy aims to promote the development of this technology, thus laying the foundations for the creation of an ecosystem of excellence in artificial intelligence that houses scientific research and innovation, the development of capabilities and talent, the deployment of data platforms and technological infrastructures, their integration into the economic fabric, the empowerment of their use in the public sector and the establishment of an ethical and regulatory framework.
In this strategy, the development of the National Program of Green Algorithms is foreseen, as well as the application of AI in the field of sustainability, with the objective of promoting a green AI, designed with energy efficiency criteria.
AI and data analytics technologies have the potential to accelerate high-volume data analytics, enabling a better understanding of environmental challenges and providing solutions to them. This will provide mechanisms to improve environmental planning, decision-making and monitoring of environmental threats.
Specifically, AI could help reduce energy and resource consumption, promote decarbonization, and boost the circular economy. This technology can also be used to analyze the results of past scientific experiments and make future experiments more successful.
