This Monday, June 21, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, together with mobile phone operators and equipment manufacturers, will begin a test in the municipalities of Alcázar de San Juan and La Solana, in the province of Ciudad Real, to analyze the coexistence of the fifth generation of mobile technology (5G) with Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT).
This test is intended to assess whether the use of the 700 MHz band for 5G deployment may have any influence on DTT emissions using the 470 MHz to 694 MHz band. In addition, mitigation actions that may be necessary will be carried out and knowledge will be acquired to resolve possible incompatibilities.
The 700 MHz band is one of the priority bands for developing 5G networks and services. The tests are carried out prior to the allocation of these frequencies, which will be held next July. When frequencies are allocated, telecom operators will be able to deploy 5G networks and services more extensively.
The tests will include the evaluation in different types of DTT reception facilities, both in an urban and rural environment, so that the data obtained allows the conclusions to be extrapolated at national level.
In both locations there is a representative sample of all types of reception facilities existing in Spain. The test will last four weeks, although this duration could be reduced if conclusive information is obtained.
Citizens who need more information or have any type of incident in the reception of DTT during the duration of this pilot can contact the phones 910 88 98 79 and 901 20 10 04
The promotion of 5G technology is a priority collected in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. This technology allows hyperconnectivity, that is, permanent, high-capacity and high-speed connections between people and machines, so it will be very disruptive for communications and, especially, for the economy.
The Government presented on December 1, 2020 the 5G Driving Strategy, a plan to accelerate the deployment of these networks in Spain that is endowed with 2 billion euros until 2025, of which 1.5 billion are included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
