The Government presents a Roadmap to encourage investment in 5G networks and services

06/05/2021
Digital Connectivity, Cybersecurity Boost and 5G Deployment
  • The second vice-president of the Government, Nadia Calviño, and the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Roberto Sánchez, transfer this road map to the companies and associations signing the Agreement for the Connectivity of People and Companies
  • The proposal recognises the value of telecommunications infrastructures, highlighted by the COVID-19 health crisis, and the need to support the deployment of 5G technology because of its potential to boost economic activity and employment.
  • The measures include support to incentivise the deployment of 5G; modification of the conditions for tendering the 700 MHz band to boost investments; optimization of allocated spectrum bands; infrastructure acceleration measures; and changes in taxation
  • The promotion of 5G technology is one of the priorities included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which plans to invest €4,000 million until 2023 to boost connectivity, 5G deployment and cybersecurity
  • The Second Vice-President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, presented today, in a meeting with telecommunications operators and associations in the sector, a Roadmap with measures to encourage the deployment of 5G networks and services.

The Second Vice-President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, presented today, in a meeting with telecommunications operators and associations in the sector, a Roadmap with measures to encourage the deployment of 5G networks and services.

The Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan It foresees an investment of 4,000 million euros until 2023 to boost connectivity, 5G and cybersecurity.

Specifically for 5G, the 5G technology driving strategy, Presented last December in the framework of the Spain Digital 2025 agenda, it foresees a public investment of 2 billion euros until 2025 to boost deployment, with special attention to rural areas, and promote R+D+I both for the realization of innovative pilots and projects that contribute to providing 5G connectivity to the big socio-economic engines and to generate capacities for the future development of 6G.

    Optimization of frequency bands

The Roadmap for Encouraging Investment in 5G Networks and Services shared today with the sector includes the optimization of allocated spectrum frequencies bands through the reordering of the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,800 MHz).

It also envisages amending the National Frequency Allocation Table (CNAF), currently subject to public consultation, to incorporate harmonised technical conditions, valid for 5G, for each of the harmonised frequency bands in Europe for electronic communications services.

    700 Mhz band frequency tender

In order to establish a sustainable deployment model, the Roadmap modifies some of the conditions for bidding for the 700 MHz band, one of the priority bands for 5G, the preliminary text of which was released for public consultation last January.
