  • This auction will complete the allocation of frequencies in the 3.5 Ghz frequency band, identified as a priority for the deployment of 5G networks
  • Two operators, Telefónica and Orange, will bid for two concessions of 10 MHz, with an output price of 21 million euros each
  • Enabling radio spectrum for 5G services is the first axis of the 5G Technology Drive Strategy, presented last December. The Strategy is part of the Spain Digital 2025 agenda and plans to make an investment to boost the deployment of 5G networks of 2 billion euros until 2025
  • On February 22, the auction of 20 MHz that were unallocated in the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,800 MHz), one of the frequency bands identified as priority for 5G in Europe, will begin.

On February 22, the auction of 20 MHz that were unallocated in the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,800 MHz), one of the frequency bands identified as priority for 5G in Europe, will begin.

Telefónica and Orange will participate in the auction of two statewide concessions of 10 MHz each, with an exit price of 21 million euros for each concession. Both operators already have 90 MHz and 100 MHz, respectively, in the 3.5 GHz band. The concessions will be in force until December 2038 in order to provide, on the one hand, a stable framework and certainty for operators who access the exploitation of these frequencies and, on the other hand, an alignment with the duration of the licenses granted in the previous auction resolved.

The tender is scheduled to begin on February 22 and will take place through the simultaneous upward auction mechanism of multiple rounds, through a secure Electronic Auction Platform (PES). Previously, on February 18 and 19, the bidding companies are scheduled to carry out the necessary tests with the platform and to familiarize themselves with the operation and operation of the platform.

After this tender, the frequencies of this band will be rearranged so that all operators have contiguous blocks of frequencies and a more efficient use of the radio spectrum is possible in the deployment of 5G technology and its services.

    Spain Digital 2025
La Estrategia de Impulso de la Tecnología 5G es una prioridad de la agenda Spain Digital 2025, submitted on 23 July 2020, as well as on Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish economy, whose general lines were presented on October 7, 2020.

The Strategy aims that in the year 2025 75% of the population will have 5G coverage through the bands that have been identified as priorities: 694-790 MHz, 3.400-3.800 MHz and 24.25-27.5 GHz. Therefore, the first axis of the Strategy is to make these bands available to operators.

The 5G Technology Boost Strategy has a public investment of 300 million in the General State Budgets for 2021 and 2 billion euros until 2025 in order to deploy these networks that will be decisive to boost digital transformation and contribute to improving connectivity in rural areas.
