  • The tender is one of the actions included in the Strategy for Boosting 5G Technology and it completes, after the auction in 2018, the allocation of one of the preferred frequency bands for 5G deployment.
  • The 5G Technology Impulse Strategy is one of the axes of the Digital Spain Agenda 2025. It contains measures to encourage the deployment of networks and the adoption by users of a key technology in digital transformation
  • Today they have been published in the Official State Gazette the conditions of the 20 MHz auction that were still unallocated in the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,600 MHz), one of the priority frequency bands identified for 5G in Europe. Today’s deadline has been published in the Official State Gazette the conditions of the 20 MHz auction that were still unallocated in the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,600 MHz), one of the priority frequency bands identified for 5G in Europe. The deadline for submitting the application for participation will be open until January 28, 2021 and the auction will begin before February 24, 2021.

Today they have been published in the Official State Gazette the conditions of the 20 MHz auction that were still unallocated in the 3.5 GHz band (3,400-3,600 MHz), one of the priority frequency bands identified for 5G in Europe. The deadline for submitting the application for participation will be open until January 28, 2021 and the auction will begin before February 24, 2021.

The Order published today determines that two statewide concessions of 10 MHz each will be auctioned, with an exit price of 21 million euros for each concession. The starting price has been established taking into account the award prices in the previous auction resolved by Order ECE/1161/2018, of October 29.

The concessions will be in effect until December 2038. This deadline is intended to provide, on the one hand, a stable framework and certainty for operators who access the exploitation of these frequencies and, on the other hand, an alignment with the duration of the licenses granted in the previous auction resolved.

After the tender of the 20 MHz of the 3.5 GHz band (3400-3800 MHz), the reorganization of the same will be carried out. This measure will make it easier for all operators to have contiguous blocks of frequencies and make possible a more efficient deployment of 5G technology and its services.

5G, the fifth generation of mobile technology, enables hyper-connectivity (permanent high-capacity, high-speed connections between people and machines and low latency), so it has a great disruptive effect to boost the recovery and digital transformation of the economy and society. That is why it is one of the priorities of both the European Union Recovery and Resilience Mechanism and the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish economy and one of the axes of the Digital Spain Agenda 2025, the road map of digital transformation in Spain.

In order to take full advantage of the transformative potential of this technology, the Government has recently presented a 5G Technology Boost Strategy that will have public funding of 2 billion euros until 2025, of which 300 million euros are already established in the General State Budgets for 2021.

In addition to this tender, the Strategy foresees that in the first quarter of 2021 the 700 MHz band will be uploaded and subsequently the allocation of the frequencies of the 26 MHz band will be completed.
