The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Roberto Sánchez, has chaired the meeting of the Sectoral Commission for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, in which the councilors and representatives of the Autonomous Communities and the Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla have participated.
The main objective of the meeting was to present the objectives and measures of the Plan for Digital Connectivity and Infrastructures and the Strategy of Promotion of 5G technology, as well as the investments that will be made in the next five years. Both initiatives are priority axes of the Digital Spain Agenda 2025.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the project “Digital Connectivity, Boosting Cybersecurity and 5G Deployment” is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish economy, and that 5G and connectivity boosting have been identified as priority activities in the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
In the next five years, the Plan for Connectivity and the Strategy to Boost 5G Technology foresee a public investment of 4.32 billion euros (2.32 billion for connectivity and 2,000 for 5G).
During the meeting, ways of collaboration between the Government and the Autonomous Communities have been explored to maximize the transforming effect of investments in the extension of connectivity, a vehicle of territorial vertebration, and in the development of the fifth generation of mobiles, which allows hyperconnectivity and will be a lever of economic recovery and employment.
The Plan for the Connectivity of people, companies and territories, which has a time horizon until 2025, will already have a budget of 583 million euros in 2021 and contains actions in two major areas: connectivity for all, with measures to move towards 100% coverage at 100 Mbps speed; and connectivity to transform the economy, with measures to boost the competitiveness of companies, especially SMEs.
Among the measures of the plan are actions to provide connectivity to industrial estates and other technological islands, as well as the implementation of deployments that accompany the projects of the digitalization tractor sectors included in the Spain Digital 2025 agenda: agri-food, health, mobility, tourism and trade.
For its part, the 5G Technology Impulse Strategy, which also extends until 2025, will have a budget in 2021 of 300 million. It contains actions to promote the rapid deployment of 5G networks on the main axes of transport corridors, cross-border corridors and secondary roads. In addition, it includes lines of action to encourage the use of 5G in sectoral digitizing tractor projects and measures to create a safe and reliable environment in the use of 5G networks and services.
