Implementation of the National 5G Observatory

The Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda has promoted the implementation of the National 5G Observatory, whose shared headquarters will be located in the facilities of the Mobile World Capital Foundation in Barcelona and Madrid.

The Observatory will encourage public-private cooperation, and will contribute to the promotion of entrepreneurship in the field of the fifth generation of mobile phone technologies, being one of the main objectives of the Observatory to promote the candidacy of Barcelona as European capital of 5G for the deployment of mobile phones. The center will have an initial investment of one million euros, and will establish a strategic connection between the main technological poles of the country, locating its headquarters in Madrid and Barcelona. In addition to promoting the development of companies and technology startups, the Observatory will issue studies and reports on 5G, promote research, and promote the internationalization of activities linked to this technology, with a special focus on Ibero-America. The Observatory will also promote training and training in 5G technologies, offering online courses and other training activities such as workshops and information days.

The development of broadband technologies and their evolution towards 5G or fifth generation wireless communication networks, is a key factor for the future of mobile connectivity and the relationship between Internet-connected devices. The importance of deploying such networks lies in their ability to provide multiple core services such as mobile content transmission services; exchange services for the Information and Knowledge Society; high-density user services; robotics and intelligent transport services; as well as for public safety.
