IPv6 Impulse Plan

The Council of Ministers today approved the Promotion Plan for the incorporation of the new Internet protocol, the IPv6 protocol, in Spain. The plan, promoted by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and, within the scope of the general integration of the IPv6 protocol in public administrations, by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Administration, responds to the forthcoming exhaustion of the addresses of the previous version of the protocol (IPv4).

With the approval of this plan, it is intended to promote the development of the Information Society and the deployment of new services and promote technological innovation, placing Spain in a prominent place in the evolution of the Internet and the knowledge society.

The plan will disseminate didactic information on the new Internet protocol, develop training actions and streamline the technological changes that are necessary for the effective incorporation of IPv6 in the stakeholders.

Plan content

The measures contemplated in the plan approved today are the following:

  1. Incorporation of the IPv6 protocol in the Internet services of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and in the portal 060.
  2. Puesta en marcha de un portal de internet sobre el protocolo IPv6 ( www.ipv6.es ), which will contain explanatory and didactic information. Also, the e-government portal of the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Administration ( www.administracionelectronica.gob.es ) will provide information on the process of incorporation of IPv6 in Public Administrations.
  3. Organization of theoretical and practical sessions on IPv6 technical aspects, free of charge, throughout the national territory.
  4. Support for training projects for ICT professionals in SMEs in the field of IPv6 is included in the framework of the Progreso Plan.
  5. Promotion of public-private collaboration in IPv6 dissemination and training. Within the framework of the Progreso Plan, grants are granted to projects developed by the private sector aimed at incorporating IPv6 in networks and services.
  6. The Ministry of Industry will ensure the full operation of the IPv6 protocol in the domain name system under the territorial code “.es”.
  7. Creation of a Working Group for the incorporation of the IPv6 protocol, which will contribute to the coordination of actions to monitor the evolution of IPv6 in Spain.
  8. Promotion of the incorporation of the IPv6 protocol in public administrations through the collegiate bodies responsible for Electronic Administration.
  9. Promotion of the incorporation of IPv6 as a requirement in public procurement in information and communication technology products and services.
  10. Monitoring and coordination in relation to European and international events on the incorporation of IPv6.
