Coordination meeting with the head of the UN’s AI Governance Laboratory for Humanity in Valencia

The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, and the Delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, held a meeting with Ana García Robles, recently appointed head of the United Nations Artificial Intelligence Governance Laboratory for Humanity, and the head of Facilities of the Information and Communications Technology Infrastructure of the United Nations, Michel Bergeron.

This Laboratory is a new international initiative of the United Nations created to intensify the debate on the global governance of Artificial Intelligence worldwide. It will have its international headquarters in the city of Valencia and will depend on the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET).

The UN is leading the Global Dialogue on AI Governance by promoting intense cooperation between governments, businesses, the scientific community and civil society. Through this Laboratory, the application of the Global Digital Compact agreements in the industry and economy will be accelerated to achieve a safe and reliable AI between countries at a global level.

The government delegate has stressed that “the city of Valencia is going to be the global epicentre of something as transcendental as the debate for the global governance of AI. Valencia as a place of world inspiration for the United Nations to consolidate democratic rules of the game to put reliable rules to this fourth industrial revolution.”

The Secretary of State said that “from Spain we are leading the global debate on AI governance, and we have been key in the recent process of creating the Scientific Panel or the AI Global Dialogue at the UN. This laboratory will become a knowledge producer for AI governance and develop an intellectual wisdom that extends the comparative advantages offered by Spain.”
