The Spanish Society for Technological Transformation, Public Business Entity, SETT, attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, has announced the upcoming launch of grants worth 19.5 million euros. These funds will go to Spanish media that want to develop digitization projects and co-official languages.
The initiative is part of the ‘PERTE New Language Economy’: Information in Spanish and co-official languages’ that aims to promote the economic potential of Spanish and co-official languages by promoting the internationalization, dissemination and expansion of the media sector in those languages.
The “PERTE New Language Economy”, with a public investment of 725 million euros, is financed by European funds within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, of which 19.5 million euros will be managed by SETT for this project.
The objective is to support Spanish companies involved in the media environment in their digital transformation and content dissemination projects, as well as in the adoption of new technological tools for the management and treatment of content in Spanish and co-official languages.
Plan of Action for Democracy
This call is articulated within the framework of the Action Plan for Democracy to strengthen transparency, pluralism and the right to information, approved by the Government of Spain last September.
In particular, it is part of measure 2.4.4., which promotes the implementation of an aid programme worth EUR 100 million - which has been extended to EUR 124.5 million - to promote the digitisation of the media through the creation of databases, the development of tools to improve productivity and information quality, as well as the strengthening of cybersecurity.
The majority item, worth 65 million euros, is dedicated to the digitization of printed media, through Red.es (public business entity attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, through the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence) which, in addition, will provide 5 million euros to develop a Digital Kit for the strengthening of smaller media, with special attention to local and regional ones.
In addition, together with the EUR 19.5 million in SETT loans for digitisation projects and technological tools for dissemination and content management, three more items are broken down: 15 million euros to strengthen cybersecurity, which will be managed by the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE); and two other grants, managed by the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, of 10 million euros to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the mainstream media; and another 10 million euros, for data sharing projects.
This Plan, in which the programs aimed at the digitization of the media are framed, is based on the European Law on Freedom of the Media, a regulation approved last March and mandatory for EU member states from August 2025.
