The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, has today assessed the significant increase in the contribution of the digital sector to the national GDP, reaching 26% in 2024, in the presentation of the 5th edition of the report ‘Digital Economy in Spain’, prepared by the Spanish Association of Digital Economy (Adigital) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
González Veracruz stressed in his speech that “this milestone is not the result of chance, but of a firm political decision after the pandemic, of ambitious investment, active listening to the productive fabric and an own governance that is working”. In addition, he stressed that the increase of almost two points compared to the previous year shows “the robust momentum of transformation that crosses both the traditional and the emerging sectors”.
The Secretary of State has pointed out that these data confirm that Spain consolidates its digital transformation model through collaborative governance between administrations and companies, with initiatives such as RETECH, the Digital Kit —which has already supported more than 680,000 SMEs— or the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation, endowed with 16 billion euros for strategic sectors. In addition, he stressed that Spain leads the development of an open and responsible AI, with the founding model ALIA, a reference in the Spanish-speaking sphere.
González Veracruz also called for the role of public AI as a driving force. This is the first time that the report has been published, supported by projects promoted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, such as the AI Sandbox and a division of the United Nations Office on AI Governance in Valencia, recently approved by the government with a voluntary contribution of 3 million euros.
The Secretary of State, who has also defended the role of the Startup Law and the development of the National Fund of Emerging Companies, concluded by stating that “Spain is today a country of digitization, artificial intelligence and public innovation. We are delivering on our strategy and moving exponentially towards 2030.”
