Red.es develops a pioneering project using 5G and virtual reality for treatment of multiple sclerosis patients
The Public Enterprise Entity, Red.es, attached to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, has launched a pilot project in the field of health, which uses 5G and virtual reality in treatments with patients suffering from multiple sclera sis.
This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through Red.es and co-financed with European funds, is developed in the university hospital of La Princesa de Madrid together with Telefónica, technological provider of both 5G and 5G connectivity. edge computingand La Frontera VR, a company specialized in virtual reality, and that will develop virtual scenarios applying the dynamics of video games.
The Rehabilitation Service and the Multiple Sclerosis Unit of the University Hospital of La Princesa, has adapted and designed the exercise program aimed at rehabilitation using virtual reality, reality that moves to two scenarios: a desert island and a medieval scenario.
In this case, 5G technology is another step to take the physiotherapist to the home of the patient with multiple sclerosis, while the patient lives in an immersive and interactive way an experience that applies the dynamics of video games to rehabilitation techniques, through this pioneering project. The patient has Virtual Reality glasses that, thanks to 5G connectivity, allow him to carry out his rehabilitation together with other patients and perform collaborative exercises, in a context of virtual reality, and guided at all times by the health staff.
About 5G Pilot Projects
Red.es develops calls to promote the development of projects and pilot experiences of 5G technology, which are framed in the Technology Impulse Strategy 5G, Component 15 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and one of the axes of the Digital Spain Agenda 2026.
The objective of these projects promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation and co-financed with European funds, is to make it easier for their recipients to experiment with 5G technology, explore new functionalities, develop use cases and gain experience in network deployment and radio spectrum use.
The 5G innovation pilot projects of Red.es are aimed at operators, technology and service providers, application developers, universities and research centers, as well as companies involved in digital transformation.
