The Government grants a grant of 5 million euros to the RAE to implement the project ‘Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence’ (LEIA)
This grant aims to develop the technology and tools necessary for artificial intelligence to process Spanish correctly.
The Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, approved on Tuesday the direct granting of a grant of 5 million euros to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) for the implementation of the Project ‘Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence’ (LEIA).
This budget allocation is part of the Strategic Project for the Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) of the New Language Economy of the Recovery Plan and the Digital Spain Agenda 2026.
With the aim of increasing and improving the use of Spanish in the digital sphere, the Government and the RAE join forces to develop the technology and tools needed for artificial intelligence (AI) to properly process Spanish.
The project seeks to promote the development of an industry based on language technologies (natural language processing, machine translation and conversational systems), which allows companies and products in Spanish to compete in the ongoing technological revolution.
Through this action of the Government and the RAE Linguistic resources, tools and models will be generated and made available to research centers, companies and users in an open, accessible way and in formats suitable for their use and reuse, generating an important transfer of knowledge to the economy.
Among the many activities planned, the creation of an observatory of neologisms and technicalities stands out where through the IA These types of words are automatically collected in real time.
Furthermore, content language verification and automatic response tools will be created and developed. To do this, it is necessary to properly organize and classify all the data and create tools that allow it to be exploited optimally.
Collaboration between the Government and the RAE it focuses on taking into consideration the language - and in particular Spanish, which is the third most used language on the Internet after English and Chinese - as the fundamental element for the development of chatbots, virtual assistants, simultaneous translation and reading comprehension.
The results obtained thanks to the execution of this collaboration will benefit the entire Spanish-speaking community, consisting of 591 million people, 7.5% of the world's population.
