The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service, Óscar López, held a meeting today with the President of the Government of Asturias, Adrián Barbón. During the meeting, the minister acknowledged the excellent work that President Barbón is doing to add Asturias to the green and digital revolutions that Spain is leading. Barbón announced that it will be the CCAA that will host the third Meeting Forum of the Government and the Autonomous Communities on the data.
The minister stressed that for the government digital transformation is an opportunity for cohesion between people, companies and territories. “In times of polarization, sharing technological prosperity makes us better as a country,” he added. He also recalled that since 2021, his ministry has allocated more than 240 million euros to digitally reindustrialize Asturias.
More than 115 million have been invested in connectivity, which has allowed 5G in Asturias to go from 61% coverage in 2021 to 94%.
More than EUR 18 million has also been invested in digitising and modernising the Asturian Civil Service and more than EUR 104 million in projects for the comprehensive digitisation of the region, such as:
- The Digital Kit, which has granted more than 14,800 grants to Asturian SMEs and self-employed people to improve their presence on the Internet or introduce AI in their businesses.
- Educate in Digital, a program with which we have delivered more than 3,500 laptops and tablets to vulnerable students from 363 Asturian schools.
− GIJON-IN, the Smart Cities project that financed the modernization of the local administration of Gijon with more than 4 million euros contributed by Red.es.
The importance of cybersecurity
Likewise, and in times of geopolitical instability, the minister has highlighted the investment of almost 23 million euros in cybersecurity in Asturias through INCIBE.
These investments led to the launch of a chair in cybersecurity at the University of Oviedo, and the development of the CIBERREG project to strengthen the capabilities of SMEs and the self-employed in cybersecurity, in collaboration with the Digital Agency of the Principality of Asturias.
