Madrid, January 14, 2025.- The process of digital transformation of the defense has today made a very important step with the signing of an agreement to deploy a 5G communications network in the Training Center of "San Gregorio" main field of instruction of the Earth Army and a leading NATO site.
“This new state-of-the-art communication infrastructure will help to complete the preparation of the Spanish contingents and those of our allies,” said the Minister of Defense after the signing of the agreement with the Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Service, Óscar López.
“I can affirm that there will not be many maneuvers in Europe with these capacities and that they demonstrate once again that Spain and its Armed Forces are a serious, reliable and committed ally,” the minister said.
Spain currently leads the multinational 5G technology in the NATO field that has aroused the interest of other nations, becoming an international showcase of the digital transformation of Defense and the Armed Forces.
Lopez said that if we develop projects like today’s, “it is because we are clearly committed to a technological sovereignty that also covers the protection of citizens.”
The path towards a digital Spain “requires strategic and specific investments such as these, initiatives that boost both our competitiveness and our cybersecurity”, added Óscar López, while taking the opportunity to highlight the interministerial collaboration that has led to the approval, in today’s Council of Ministers, of the draft law on coordination and governance of cybersecurity.
The investment in the 5G communications network at the "San Gregorio" Training Center will serve to develop technologies related to encryption, cybersecurity and data protection. And it offers an opportunity to invigorate and boost companies in the sector.
The project will be funded by the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with an estimated investment of EUR 15 million.
